Unfortunately child murderers are much more common than any of us would like to think. The public is very divided about the punishment the children should receive. Some believe that children who commit murder should be tried as adults, others believe that they shouldn’t go to prison at all, regardless of the crimes that they have committed but should be rehabilitated instead. The children in this list have carried out the most shocking crimes that you will find disturbing.
8. Daniel Bartlam, 14
Daniel Bartlam was 14 years old when he killed his mother Jacquline Bartlam on Easter 2011. Daniel hit her several times in the face with a claw hammer as she slept and then set her body on fire. He then rang the police and told them that a burglar had done it. The police were not convinced with his story and searched his computer where they discovered a file that Daniel had deleted. The file contained detailed plans about the murder. Daniel was arrested and sentenced to a minimum of 16 years in prison.
7. Eric Smith, 13
In 1993, Eric Smith was arrested for the murder of four year old Derrick Robbie. Eric was just 13 years old at the time. He lured little Robbie away from a park and choked him, dropped rocks on the little boys head and sexually assaulted him. Smith confessed to the murder, was arrested and later sentenced to a minimum of nine years. As of April 2014, Smith has been denied parole seven times.
6. George Stinney,14
In 1944, Geroge Stinney was convicted and charged with the murder of two white girls, Betty June Binnicker, 11, and Mary Emma Thames,7. George, who was 14 at the time had been seen talking to the two girls the day before their bodies were discovered. Within 3 months George had been tried, sentenced to death and executed by electric chair. His family have never given up trying to clear his name and are still protesting today.
5. Alyssa Bustamante, 15
Alyssa was 15 when she murdered her 9 year old neighbor Elizabeth Olten in Missouri 2009. Alyssa slit the throat of the young girl before putting her in a pre dug grave. The court heard that she had severe psychological problems, but despite this, she was tried as an adult and sentenced to life in prison.
4. Joshua Phillips, 14
Joshua Phillips murdered his 8 year old neighbour, Maddie Cliffton when she left her home to play basketball. Joshua swore that he accidentally hit her on the head when they were playing ball, causing Maddie to cry. He then said that he hit her again to make her stop. Not knowing what to do, Joshua carried Maddie into his house and hid her under his bed. She was not discovered for another week when his mother noticed a foul smell coming from her sons room. She looked under the bed and found Maddies body. Joshua was charged with first degree murder and sentenced to life without parole.
3.Mary Bell, 11
Mary Bell was 11 years old when in 1968 she murdered two boys in North East England. Martin Brown was 4 and Brian Howe was 3. Mary strangled Martin in an abandoned house. A few months later, with the help of her friend Norma Joyce Bell, they went on to strangle Brian. The two girls mutalated Brian’s body and cut the letter “M” into his stomach. Mary Bell was arrested and sent to prison where she stayed until 1980, she was then released with a new identity.
2. Paul Henry Gingerich, 12
On April 21st 2010, Paul Gingerich, 12, and Colt Lundy, 15, killed Colts stepfather Phillip Danner. The two boys and a mutual friend, Chase Williams had planned to run away together, but Colt had told Paul and Chase that his step father would come after them if they did, so they had to kill him first. Chase Williams got cold feet and would not take part in the murder, but Paul and Colt waited in the house until Phillip came home. When he stepped into the living room, the boys shot him 4 times in the chest. Paul was sentenced to 30 years in prison with the possibility of parole at the age of 18 if he engages thoroughly with his rehabilitation programme.
1.Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, both 10
One of the most notorious murders in British history was carried out by two 10 year old boys. Venables and Thompson were skipping school when they lured 3 year old Jamie Bulger away from a shopping centre he was at with his mother and took him on a long walk along a canal where they were seen by over 40 people who all believed that the little boy was a younger bother. The pair went on to subject the little boy to horrific physical and sexual abuse. They then left his body on the train tracks and covered him with stones. Bulger was hit by a train and his body was not found until two days later. Venables and Thompson were linked to the murder after CCTV footage showed the two boys leading the toddler away. The boys were tried as adults and sent to rehabilitation units. In 2001 they were released with new identities. On the 7th of March 2010, Venabled was returned to prison for having child pornography.
