A Russian artist named Michael Zajkova from Moscow, hand crafts the most amazing, realistic dolls you’ve ever seen. The bodies are made from polymer clay, the eyes are made from German glass and a French mohair wig is added to make the dolls even more realistic. Each doll is hand sculpted by Michael and are not available for sale. Michael refuses to sell any of the amazing dolls he creates.
Michael studied sculpting at Kuban State University in Southern Russia. He is not only talented at sculpting, but also fashion design as he creates all of the garments worn by the dolls. He bases the designs of the dresses on early 20th century fashion and works with voile, silk and even antique lace.
When Michael graduated from university in 2009, he worked alongside fashion designer Irina Kuzyomina where he learned how to work with materials and sew fabric. He also worked for a time at a puppet theatre.
In 2013, Michael showed some of his dolls at Art Dolls, an international exhibition held in Moscow, Russia. The five dolls he took to the show, Anastasia, Antonia, Nina, Xenia and Zoe were an instant hit.
Although the dolls have divided opinions, everybody that’s seen them agrees that the dolls are an amazing show of craftsmanship, but some feel that the dolls are too realistic and creepy.
Michael is now working on a collection of new, boy dolls that will open at Moscow’s International Doll Salon in March 2016.
